        Speaker profile:
        Shao Lei, a senior teacher of Suzhou High School, teaches the preparatory class for the junior class of University of Science and Technology of China. He was a visiting teacher in University of Illinois and Durham University in 2000 and 2004 respectively for academic purposes. Mr. Shao specializes in teaching English literature reading and writing.

        Introduction:
        In this lesson, students will be led to read an excerpt from To Kill a Mockingbird. The purpose is to help them learn to appreciate English novels in terms of linguistic features, rhetorical techniques, characterization and cultural conflicts. This lesson aims at providing insights for teaching English literature in secondary schools.
